The Actioncam with outstanding video quality. The Insta360 One R 1-inch Edition convinced in the test with its exquisite sharpness. The action cam is put together from three modules, whereby the camera module with large Leica lens and 1-inch image sensor is responsible for the excellent video quality. The small cam films in a maximum resolution of 5,312 x 2,988 pixels, the photo resolution is also high at 19 megapixels. A good choice for everyone who does not want to compromise on video quality.

  • Pros:
    Outstanding sharpness
Cope well with light and shadow
Can be converted into a 360° camera
  • Cons:
    Short battery life

Insta360 One R 1-inch edition Review: GoPro under pressure

With the One R 1-Inch Edition, Insta360 has brought an action cam onto the market that uses a conspicuous lens to signal that it is taking image quality particularly seriously. But the real trump card is hidden in the small housing: a 1-inch image sensor. This is unusually large for an action cam, and there is only one sensor in the body of the market leader GoPro Hero8 Black, which covers around 25 percent of the surface. Reason enough to send the Insta360 with Leica lens to the test laboratory and carefully check the video quality, as well as battery performance and equipment.

In this review, we only discuss the Insta360 One R 1-inch edition with the 1-inch module attached. If you are interested in the cheaper Insta360 One R with a 4k wide-angle module.

Sharp sharpness with a reserve of resolution

The camera module of the 1-inch One R was designed by Insta360 with the traditional company Leica. Already visually it catches the eye through the relatively large lens with the equivalent of 35 mm focal length (35 mm), which looks even more massive thanks to a removable protective filter. The actual heart of the module, however, consists of the 1-inch image sensor with a diagonal of 16 mm.

For comparison: A sensor with a size of 1 / 2.3 inch is in conventional action cams, so the diagonal shrinks to 7 mm. The larger sensor has the advantage that it offers the individual pixels more space, which has a positive effect on signal processing. In addition, Insta360 uses the space to make the picture a little wider: Instead of a maximum video resolution of 4,000 x 3,000 pixels as with GoPro, the One R 1-inch offers a total of 5,312 x 2,988 pixels.

The concept of Insta360 and Leica works: Our test laboratory attests that the innovative action cam has outstanding video quality. At the time of the test, it even set a top score: With the highest video resolution, we were able to measure a resolution of 1,312 line pairs per image height in the image center. For comparison: The GoPro Hero8 Black, which is also very good, only manages 1,152 line pairs here. Our experts were also impressed by the ability of the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition to adapt to light-dark transitions when filming.

Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition is ready for any action

We also had little to complain about in terms of equipment. The modular principle makes the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition very flexible: Depending on how the camera and operating module is placed on the battery block, the display is at the front or at the back, ideal for either taking selfies or following the route film in front. The disadvantage: Since the display is only on the operating module, it is very small. 1.4 inches are enough to control the image section, but it cannot be said whether the focus is really good. Operation via the touch display is also rather fiddly.

The Insta360 One R 1-inch Edition takes photos with a resolution of 19 megapixels. We particularly liked the HDR mode, which automatically adjusts subjects with bright sunlight and deep shadows and thus makes details more visible. There are also modes for series pictures, night and interval recordings with intervals of three to 120 seconds. In the video mode, the timeshift and timelapse modes are also available. Very good: Shutter speed, ISO and white balance can be adjusted manually, regardless of whether you are photographing or filming.

Once put together, the body looks very stable and is even waterproof up to a depth of five meters. With the optional dive case, the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition can withstand dives of up to 10 meters. The package, however, only includes the mounting frame with which the action cam can be attached to a tripod. A 3.5 mm jack of professional microphones can be connected via an optional adapter. And of course you can control the One R remotely via WLAN and Bluetooth.

The Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition gets along well with fast action. In the highest resolution and 2.7k, it creates 60 images (fps) at 80 megabits per second. In Full HD even 120 fps, with which fast movements can be captured impressively. The electronic image stabilizer can only be switched on in the free Insta360 Studio 2020 app, but it does a very good job here. Contrary to what the name Insta360 suggests, you cannot record 360° videos with the One R 1-inch. To do this, you need a dual lens module, which costs another 200 euros.

Battery life of the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition: A short pleasure

The battery of the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition is in a separate module, the “Battery Base”. At test center found out, it unfortunately only has enough energy available that you can film 53 minutes in the highest resolution; in Full HD this value is extended to 76 minutes. If you are planning longer projects, you should definitely buy a second battery or the “Boosted Battery Base”, which, according to the manufacturer, offers twice the capacity.

Alternative: save with the market leader

The 1-inch edition of the Insta360 One R offers a very exciting concept, and the video quality is also impressive in the test. However, you have to dig deep into your pocket for the chic modular camera. The top model Hero8 Black from the market leader GoPro, which tops our list of the best, is significantly cheaper. The video quality is only marginally worse, but the GoPro convinces with a slightly higher battery capacity and, above all, with a very lush equipment, which can be adapted to the most varied of requirements with optional housing and accessories.
