The Netgear Nighthawk R6700 setup works with the app without any problems and unambiguously. As far as I have noticed, ONLY via the app, after that the router can be reached normally in the network via all devices!
Netgear Nighthawk R6700 Quick Review
The functions are great and the user interface is easy to understand, for IT freaks, of course, everything else can be set via desktop or IP. The Netgear Nighthawk R6700 performance is excellent, very stable and far better than the router / modems provided by the provider (I now use the provider modem as a bridge). 5Ghz network promises very high performance, of course the range is not that far / good, but there is also the 2.4Ghz network, which is also absolutely fine for normal consumers.
The switch was made on the one hand because of better network control and on the other hand because of more stable gaming performance. And YES, the R6400 is definitely a recommendation for everyone who doesn’t want to buy a “gaming router” for several hundred euros and still doesn’t risk a loss of performance.
My PC (ac receiver) is in line through two standard walls approx. 8m away from the router on the same floor and still has approx. 80-90% signal strength in the 5Ghz range. For me a very good value! After my TP-Link TL-WR1043ND, which I bought in 2011, was getting on in years and some newer devices couldn’t cope with it, this new Netgear router was recently purchased. Among other things, the ability to switch off the WiFi signal using a schedule and the parallel dual-band WiFi 2.4 & 5 GHz function was decisive for the purchase.
Netgear Nighthawk R6700 Installation
The setup was quick and easy and, above all, problem-free. In the clearly and logically designed user interface, the menu items for assigning the fixed IP addresses (for my two NAS systems and the Canon printer / scanner) and the time control of the WLAN signal were easy to find. Entering the time zone in which the router was operated was a little more difficult to find.
The same SSID was selected for the 2.4 GHz network that was used with the old TP-Link. The key was also left the same, so it was not necessary to set up the Dyson air purifier, the security cameras, the Canon printer / scanner, the Internet radio and the Android smartphones. Only the Windows PCs noticed that this was a new device.
The signals of the two frequency bands cover the entire apartment without any problems, although they have to go through up to 3 reinforced concrete walls. In this case, however, the 5 GHz signal arrives a little weaker in the distant office. Nevertheless, there is a noticeable improvement when working in the home office with the Lenovo ThinkPad notebook used there (this now uses a 5 GHz signal). The ThinkPad was one of those devices that couldn’t work so well with the old TP-Link. There have been no more disconnections since the changeover.
Basically, the 5 GHz network offers the advantage that you can (still) work on your own in the frequency band, and at the same time dozens of neighbors crowd and interfere with each other on 2.4 GHz. The Netgear Nighthawk R6700 itself is compact and looks great. Both the router and the power supply do not get warm and stay at room temperature.
Netgear Nighthawk R6700 Function & Speed
The Netgear Nighthawk R6700 router already runs here with a LAN connection to the company server (you can also connect devices directly to the sockets in the wall). So it acts as a WLAN adapter to supply all wireless devices in the room. Connected, a few seconds later the connection was established, 5G can also be selected via a separate SSID.
For several months not a single dropout, no weak connection, no problems. After switching off (vacation, for example), the connection is back after 15 seconds. Printers, MacBooks, iPhones, network players and the like run reliably via WLAN 5G or Ethernet cable, on the side accessible via the browser, guest access can be created, the connection checked and other settings made easily and clearly.
Absolutely convincing for the price, it’s really fun. World difference to network operator devices and earlier Fritz boxes, but this could also be due to the very stable server connection at my university. Signal quality within the room overcrowded with electrical devices is maximally good across the whole area, with a sharp drop in masonry at a distance of 10-20m.
The download speeds of 100mbps are possible without any problems, depending on the server load; if there are several devices at the same time, the WLAN bandwidth is sensibly distributed. I would definitely recommend the device, but I assume that it will do its job for several years.
