Xbox Scorpio: First pictures from the developer console

Xbox Scorpio: First pictures from the developer console

An exciting time for Xbox fans: With the Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft has the supposedly strongest game console in the world behind. At the end of the year, the Daddelkiste will conquer the market. The manufacturer wants to present his first impressions within the framework of E3 2017 . A few days ago, the company revealed some technical details. Compared to a specialist magazine, the Redmonder presented even first pictures of the current developer console. This is, however, only boiled versions of the Xbox One S. The final Scorpio should look different.

In the coming weeks, Microsoft will provide first game developers with this version of the console - and give them a small performance bonus. As the manufacturer explained, the current Dev kits are more powerful than the final Xbox Scorpio. So the developer consoles have about 24 instead of 12 gigabytes of memory on board and the graphics unit comes with 44 instead 40 cores therefore. This is to enable the game creators to create their games with maximum performance and to adapt them to the possibilities of the Xbox Scorpio. According to Microsoft, this approach is easier than starting with the performance of the final console. The current Dev Kit is equipped with a small display and five programmable buttons. The ventilation slots Microsoft has moved to the sides and back,

Xbox Scorpio: The Used Technique
Over the technical side of DigitalFoundry, the Xbox makers recently publish first hard facts about the new console. The following components work accordingly in the Xbox Scorpio:
  • Processor: 8 x86 cores working at 2.3 gigahertz
  • Graphic chip: 40 Compute Units with a total of 2,560 computing units working at 1172 Megahertz
  • RAM: 12 GB GDDR-5 RAM, 8 GB available for games, 4 GB for the system (bandwidth: 326 GB per second)
  • Hard Drive: 2.5 inch HDD with 1 terabyte memory
  • Drive: 4K UHD-capable Blu-ray drive

Xbox Scorpio with reworked processor
The drive is in Microsoft's Scorpio still the AMD under the codename "Jaguar" developed eight-core processor, which is also used in the Xbox One and Xbox One S. Microsoft did not dare to do large experiments in the form of a complete new development. Finally, Scorpio is also to be downwards compatible and thus digest all Xbox One titles and some older Xbox 360 games. Nevertheless, the new CPU has little to do with the old Xbox One computing unit: According to Microsoft, AMD has improved the manufacturing process, made adjustments and reduced latencies. In addition, the CPUs now tolerate higher clock frequencies: the eight cores of the processor can now operate with a saturated 2.3 gigahertz instead of 1.75 gigahertz.

Graphics chip with more computing units
The biggest innovation, however, is in the graphics chip accommodated in the processor: Scorpio can distribute the computation of game figures, objects and environments on 40 "Compute Units" with 64 computing units each. The Xbox One had only twelve cores with 64 computing units available for these tasks. Why? Since Scorpio can also play high-resolution games in 4K with 3840x2160 pixels and so have four times more pixels compared to full-HD titles (1920x1080 pixels), the dozens of Compute Units of the Xbox One would simply be overwhelmed with the data flow. AMD has also increased the clock frequencies: the 2560 computing units (40 compute units times 64 computing units) clock with 1172 instead of 914 megahertz. Pay for the gamblers: A liquid, More detailed and realistic representation of 4K games. Provided the game manufacturers have programmed their titles appropriately and the gamers already has a 4K TV.

Memory of the Scorpio significantly increased
But a fast double of CPU and graphics chip does not make the console fast. Scorpio has to process enormous amounts of data in the calculation of scaffolds (polygons) and surfaces (textures) especially in 4K. Their intermediate results must be able to be swapped quickly - even before the console shows a finished movement of a character on the television. That's why Microsoft has significantly increased the working and graphics memory: Instead of 8 gigabytes, the Scorpio can now go back to 12 gigabytes. 8 gigabytes of the graphics chip are available, 4 gigabytes are reserved for the Jaguar CPU. Another new feature: Microsoft's Scorpio is finally using fast GDDR5 memory instead of the lame DDR3 version. Sony already used GDDR5 memory on the first PS4 version.

More data lines
To ensure that data traffic is not stalled, Scorpio also has significantly more data lines between CPU, graphics chip and memory. Instead of 256, the new console now has 384. Thus, Microsoft wants to ensure a maximum data transfer rate of 326 gigabytes per second. For comparison: Nvidia's top graphic card Titan X has the exact same number of data lines, with 12 gigabytes but more and even faster graphics memory (type: GDDR5X) with its 384 bit large memory interface.

Lots of steam, lots of heat, lots of noise?
The gamers may be drawn to the noise level of Scorpio. As the data on the paper read so nicely, they contain so many risks. On the one hand, AMD has provided the Scorpio processor with many more circuits, which are now much closer to each other in the same space. On the other hand, the chip manufacturer has significantly increased the clock frequencies. As a result, a lot of heat arises under full load. Does the noise level still remain at a tolerable level? In order to protect the processor from heat death, the Scorpio has to transport the resulting heat from the housing by means of fast rotating (and usually loud) fans. The power supply now housed in the housing should also provide for additional heat generation. Correct: Microsoft renounces the chunky, external boxes of the predecessors.

Hard disk instead of SSD
Without great tests, however, it is already clear: Scorpio still has a Tempobremse. Instead, on a fast SSD store gambling games, movies, music and other data on a classic hard disk in 2.5 inch format and 1 Terabyte memory. With a modern SSD, start and load times could be significantly reduced. There are also no marketing phrases on the part of Microsoft, which claim that "load times due to the higher access control of the hard disk and the larger memory significantly reduce." That works with the measures mentioned presumably to a small extent, but not "clearly".

Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti: Test the cheap Titan-X alternative

Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti: Test the cheap Titan-X alternative

The question: Nvidia's top- class graphics cards are really expensive . The Titan X costs 1.299 Euro as much as a gaming PC . The GTX 1080 is with 635 euros significantly cheaper, but is still as expensive as a half-usable notebook . Just in between, Nvidia now places the GTX 1080 Ti - for well-heeled players, who have a whopping 819 euros in the wallet. Nvidia promises a performance advantage compared to the GTX 1080 of a full 35 percent, compared to the Titan X it is 5 percent faster. That would be sensational. But is that really true? The test answers.

The undisputed number 1
Nvidia is the undisputed leader in the fastest graphics cards with its "Pascal" models - counterparty AMD has (yet) nothing to counter. And so much is certain: Also the coming, polished "Polaris" models of the AMD-RX-500 series probably do not change anything. Only the graphics processors of the "Vega" range announced for the second half of the year 2017 can provide more power among the fastest graphics chips.

GTX 1080 Ti: Available models
As with every new graphics card, there is, of course, not only the basic edition in this case. Many manufacturers rely on their own cooler and screw the stroke a bit to the top, in order to tickle the last remaining power from the chips. The fastest card on the market is currently the Zotac GTX 1080 Ti AMP Extreme with a boost clock of 1.759 MHz. If you prefer quiet and cool, you should take a look at the MSI GTX 1080 Ti Sea Hawk X - of course, because you can probably do something else in terms of power. The models range from almost 800 euros to almost 1,000 euros - depending on the equipment and accessories. Click on the following gallery to learn more about the many variations.

Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti: Test the cheap Titan-X alternative

GTX 1080 Ti with titanium X chip
Nvidia would probably have every reason to sit back and wait to see what the opponent does. The whole opposite is the case, however, with the GTX 1080 Ti bringing the US-Americans a further upper-class model into the trade. Its technical characteristics are similar to that of the much more expensive Titan X. Also on the GTX 1080 Ti is a chip with the internal designation GP-102, which can allocate computing tasks to 3.584 Cuda cores. If necessary, the computing units clock up to 1.48 gigahertz, via Turbomodus it goes up to a maximum of 1.58 gigahertz. The clock frequencies are therefore slightly higher than for the Titan X (1.41 GHz / 1.53 GHz).

Less memory, smaller interface
Differences are also present, even if these are marginal: the GTX 1080 Ti has 11 gigabytes of graphics memory of the fast type GDDR5X instead of 12 gigabytes on the Titan X. The data exchange between the graphics memory and the graphics processor is "only" over 352 lines - the Titan X, 384 lanes are available for this procedure. Nvidia has capped at the 1080 Ti a 32 bit memory interface. For this, the 1080-Ti memory can work with a slightly higher clock: the data migrate with 2.75 GHz from and to the graphics chip, with the Titan X it is 2.5 GHz.

Why 11 gigabytes of graphics memory?
The graphics memory is at first glance with both maps oversized - for most gamers this certainly applies. However, there are already games that can not cope with 8 gigabytes - at least in high resolutions. This is the tempo. Examples: Graphically opulent scenes in " Watchdogs 2 " require 11 gigabytes of graphics at a time when playing in 5K (5120 × 2880 pixels); in the same scenario , "9GB" is required for " Deus Ex ". A prerequisite for this is, of course, a 5K monitor.

Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti: fast paced
Many gamers play their titles but in Full HD with 1920x1080 pixels. For the graphics cards like the GTX 1080 Ti are simply oversized. This also showed the test: With an average of 126 images per second, the graphics chip equipped with rich 12 billion transistors provided more than enough power for a liquid display of games (from 40 frames per second). But also 4K titles with 3840x2160 pixels made the GTX 1080 Ti not to create: Here he still delivered 46 pictures per second - well-minded with full detail reproduction!

GTX-1080-Ti performance exactly at Titan-X level
This made the 1080 Ti almost exactly as fast as the Titan X (Full HD games: 127 frames per second, 4K games: 47 frames per second). Although this is not the Nvidia promised performance advantage of 5 percent, the same tempo level is nevertheless considerable. Finally, the Titan X is crisp 480 euros more expensive. The Tempovorteile opposite the smaller GTX 1080 are by the way 13 percent (Full HD games) and 22 percent (4K games).

Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti without DVI connector
No advantage there is in the Monitor all connections - Nvidia 1080 Ti no DVI connector installed in the GTX, but puts at a DisplayPort to DVI adapter. According to the manufacturer the card should use the gain on the connection plate for better heat dissipation. Compared to the Titan X, the test was only conditionally.

Heat development as in Titan X
The heat development was approximately the same in the test at 72.4 degrees. The fans for the fresh air supply were audible in graphically complex scenes (2.8 Sone), in simple office applications they could not be heard (0.4 Sone). COMPUTER BILD also measured similar values for the Titan X. This also applies to the power consumption: the test system approved under full load 351 watts, in office applications it was 51 watts (Titan X: 352 watts / 54 watts).

Polar M430: GPS sports watch with LED pulse meter on the wrist

Polar M430: GPS sports watch with LED pulse meter on the wrist

For almost three years, Polar has launched the M430, a successor to the successful M400 sports watch. Visually, the new Wearable hardly differs from its predecessor. If you look under the small training computer, flashing LEDs flash immediately. They measure the pulse at the wrist, which eliminates the annoying wearing of a chest strap. A total of six LEDs take the heart rate-on other models it is usually only two. The higher number, according to the manufacturer, allows the heart rate variability to be recorded and the heart rate variability to be recorded-an indicator of the fitness state of the wearer.

Polar M430: The functions
The integrated sensors record the actual speed, distance and altitude differences in addition to the heart rate. All this works even in enclosed areas, which makes the M430 interesting not only for runners, but also for other athletes. In addition, the GPS training computer should be waterproof-Polar itself describes it as "suitable for swimming". And last but not least, the display, like the M400, displays notifications of incoming calls and messages.

Polar M430: Endurance thanks to energy saving mode
According to the manufacturer, after a total of eight hours of training with GPS tracking and heart rate measurement, the M430 takes the strain off the battery - with its 240 milliamperes (mAh), the battery needs fresh energy from the socket again. An additional energy saving mode is, however, to extend the service life to a total of 30 hours. However, the device does not record the GPS position permanently, but only every 60 seconds. As with the predecessor M400, the M430 can also be synchronized via Bluetooth. This is the free app "PolarFlow" for iOS and Android ready. In addition, the watch is compatible with Apple's "HealthKit" as well as the apps of the online services of Strava, TrainingPeaks,

Price and availability
From May 2017 the M430 comes in three different colors (orange, black, white) to the dealer and costs just 230 euros.

Oculus co-founder: Palmer Luckey leaves Facebook

Oculus co-founder: Palmer Luckey leaves Facebook

The co-founder of the VR specialist Oculus, Palmer Luckey, is considered a driving force of the current trend to virtual reality-now he is no longer working for Facebook. The world's largest online network confirmed the departure of the 24-year-old without giving any reasons. Luckey's image has recently been cracked-initially by a billrage and then because of the secret support of a dirt campaign against Hillary Clinton.

Face of the VR trend
Palmer has been praised in recent years as the miracle child of the industry, because he had already assembled his own VR glasses from old parts as a teenager. Facebook bought Oculus for approximately 2 billion US Dollar (circa 1.87 Millairden euro) three years ago and brought the VR-glasses Oculus Rift announced by Luckey already 2012 to the production maturity. For years a legal dispute between publisher Zenimax and Oculus VR raged. The reason: Zenimax accuses the Facebook company of having stolen business secrets. John Carmack, formerly employed at Zenimax and later changed to Oculus, was to develop technologies for the construction of the Oculus Rift in his time at Zenimax and later to take him along. A court in Texas had released Oculus VR from the allegation of the theft.

Possible sales stop for the Rift
At another point, however, the jury found the manufacturer guilty: Jury members still claimed some 500 million US dollars (nearly 468 million euros) for violated confidentiality agreements, with a share of 50 million US dollars (46.79 million Euro) for Luckey. A media report According Oculus VR will appeal. Zenimax is obviously considering buying a sell-out for the Oculus Rift.

Luckey supported Trump
Oculus and Facebook had to try to limit their losses last fall after Luckey's secret support for the camp of Donald Trump in the US campaign for tensions with game developers. Luckey gave the organization Nimble America 10.000 US dollar (9.358 euro). Nimble America subsequently organized an aggressive poster campaign against Trumps Rival Hillary Clinton. That's why several software developers had announced not to develop any games for Oculus. "I am very sorry that my approach has negative consequences for the perception of Oculus and his partner," Luckey wrote back then. (With material of the dpa.)

For a long time, Samsung was able to claim a place in the sun with the smartphones, now there is a new leader: 2016, two years after the takeover of Motorola, Lenovo decided to stop the Moto series under the name Motorola market. Now the Lenovo Moto G4 Play is at the top of the mobile phone bestseller list. The mid-range smartphone has achieved a satisfactory rating in the COMPUTER BILD test and has been able to collect points with the good 5-inch HD display, fast operating speed (Snapdragon 410 and 2 Gigabyte RAM) and the removable battery; Only the camera could not really convince. The internal memory of the G4 Play is appropriate with 16 gigabytes for the price segment, with a microSD card can be expanded by 128 gigabytes.

Game console hybrid on position 1: Nintendo Switch
The release of a new video game console usually means only one thing: the first place in the sales charts is sure. So also with the recently released Nintendo Switch . Even before the actual release on 3 March 2017, the console handheld hybrid at Amazon was sold out completely, also the accessories - like the Pro controller - was quickly out of print. Although the Switch was convincing with its concept, the low power consumption and the rich colors, Nintendo's new hardware only achieved a satisfactory grade (3.35) in the COMPUTER BILD test . Among the criticisms include the scarce memory and the non-current battery life.

Apple: US authority reveals mysterious patent application

Apple: US authority reveals mysterious patent application

Im last fall, Apple filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office ( Federal Communications Commission , FCC briefly) a request for a new device with the model number A1844 a. The patent application did not reveal much, only so much: the mysterious device should have a very low power consumption and have Bluetooth and NFC functionality. It was not long before first speculation about the "wireless device" made the round: Is this a new Apple TV or a new AirPort router ? Or does the company from Cupertino bring out the first Smarthome gadget in Apple design? Until now, Apple had always denied to develop its own Smarthome products.

Everything just hot air
The disillusionment followed quickly, as last week, the authorities published an instruction manual and first photos of the mysterious device. Obviously behind the designation A1844 hides a simple card reader, which serves as a door opener. And as it is, Apple wants to use this patent only internally. There remains only to say: A sentence with x, which was probably nothing.

Duka / HP ProBook 450: Senior notebook tested

Duka / HP ProBook 450: Senior notebook tested

Test Conclusion: You must know
Great: The surface "Duka program" is easy to operate, the tiles are clearly and clearly labeled, the preinstalled applications simple. The notebook is much better suited for beginners and seniors than classic Windows computers. And if difficulties still occur, the friendly hotline continues to help, which in the test even with persistent problems did not give up. Also good: If you no longer need the Duka program, the notebook can be used as a normal Windows 10 device. However, they are comparatively expensive: similarly equipped notebooks gives s for much less money.
  • Best price on the Internet: 599,00 Euro *
  • Order this product at Amazon

Ohne Question: Windows 10 is easier than its predecessors - but the operating system is still overloaded with features, options and apps, making it unclear for less savvy users. The Danish manufacturer has recognized this and supplies its notebook Duka HP ProBook 450 with a special surface for seniors. Is the operation so much easier? The test answers.

Duka ProBook 450: Hardware from HP
Surprise: Duka does not manufacture the device itself, but uses hardware from HP. The notebook comes from the Probook series 450 G3, which Duka offers for 799 euros. The notebook is equipped with a 15.6-inch screen (39.6-centimeter-diagonal), which can also be operated by fingertip thanks to the touchscreen. The device works simply, but is class-processed.

Windows on board but invisible
Much more important than the hardware, however, is the user-friendliness-free operation: for the first commissioning, the manufacturer provides a detailed manual. At the push of a button, the notebook starts up Windows 10 and automatically the software "Duka Program". The manufacturer, together with Ældre Sagen, has developed and tested the 780,000 members of the largest senior citizen organization in Denmark.

Duka HP Probook 450 with tidy software
After the start, the user welcomes a tidy, friendly and easy-to-use tile interface. Here, there are no incomprehensible terms: Word is here word processing, the favorite title spulen users in the "music player" and not in the media player and news reads it under "news". All applications are limited to the bare minimum, the few additional features are accessible through unmistakable symbols and designations. Open users, for example, the word processing, can be accessed by "fonts" fonts in a clear list, changing the text color is possible via a box icon.

Not everything is ready for use
Good: Duka sets up a user account in advance for the buyer; customers only have to connect the device to the Internet via WLAN. But how the hell? This important function is hidden under "Help". Another drawback: According to Duka, the Videotelefonie is popular among seniors - to keep in touch with children and grandchildren. But for this they have to register by phone at Duka. That worked in the test without problems - but why this detour?

Duka / HP ProBook 450: Senior notebook tested

Duka Hotline: Expensive but helpful
And if there are problems despite Duka surface? For such cases, the manufacturer offers separate service subscriptions: For the "mini" tariff, which includes assistance by remote maintenance, Duka charges 9.99 euros per month. The "basic" tariff with telephone support, which according to Duka 89% of all customers decide, costs 17.99 euros. At first glance, these are steep prices. But the investment is worth it. If a technician comes into the house, per visit loose between 50 and 100 euros are due - even with trifles. Class: The hotline, which receives 350 to 400 calls per day, helped in the test friendly. In case of tricky concerns she even called back several times to correct the problem.

Duka HP Probook 450: hardware with weaknesses
So software and support are right - but what is the technology?

  • Operation: Keyboard and touchpad are neat, the operation is okay. The notebook is even a separate mouse. Class: The touchscreen converts inputs quickly and precisely. Seniors are also well-versed in this.
  • Image quality: The display shows photos and videos with only 1366x768 pixels. In this way, details remain on the track during playback, pensioners must live with a slightly blurred playback. In this price class is a full HD display (1920x1080 pixels) is actually mandatory.
  • Tempo: The notebook works with an entry-level processor Intel Core i3, the working temperature is therefore not very high. For the operation by Duka program, however, the determined Tempowerte are more than sufficient.
  • Memory: The notebook has a 119-gigabyte SSD on board. The capacity is therefore limited - who plays a few pictures, videos and music on the device, so quickly reaches the limits. After all, the memory can be expanded via an external hard disk , memory card or USB stick.
  • Recharge times: The recharge time has convinced - the notebook came out for four hours without a socket.

The car loses more and more symbolic power in Germany. Previously the Mercedes was still a sign of prosperity before the front door. Today, he is at most a muddle. In Germany, it is no longer possible to name a six-liter V8 sled. Obviously people without status symbols do not come out. Therefore, new equipment is being sought, with which one can show off its social status. For one, this is an iPhone, for the others a sinfully expensive bike and for others it is the Thermomix. What all things have in common? They cost as much as a small car. The car then plays a role again. Only as an object of comparison.

As with many statistic symbols you are looked at obliquely, if one then with a more favorable alternative comes. "The Monsieur Cuisine of Lidl is not bad, but next time we would like to cook with us again." It is the super cute statements that particularly non-owners of Thermomix meet. The "Aber-sentences". "Great, but the QUIGG-Kochmixer from Aldi has integrated the scales?" "Not a pity, but so many delicious recipes as for the Thermomix is not there?" Heaven, I know my device is not as great as yours. Come down from your high horse. Is there envy in me? Maybe. Is there such an approach as a hint of arrogance? Most certainly!

The Thermomix as a religion
I've been a long time against the thermomix and all copies. Is not that another superfluous kitchen machine, which can be ordered at night at QVC and then after a few inserts in the kitchens stumbling? Not at all, as I had to find. I said that when I came to meet with Thermomix friends, I was even punished for the negative word about this high-performance machine, as if I had the chef-dev in person. And then I was exorcised for hours. The disbelief was me with recipe book , Varoma and Spatula almost beaten out. In the end, I had to acknowledge the infallibility of the Vorwerk deity. If the thermomix could at least cure cancer. But here the glory of the golden calf has come to an end.

As with all believers, Thermomix disciples can not be converted. How often have I tried to convince my friends that the Thermomix is not the holy grail of the kitchen. Like the ten commandments, the twelve functions of the machine were enumerated. And now the Thermomix can even get into the Internet . I am afraid of the next cooking evening with my friends. The invitation is already on my desk. I have not told you yet. It is noticeable to me that such invitations flutter more and more rarely into the house lately. Perhaps I am in my circle of friends as the black sheep. Well, for an unbeliever must always exist. In addition, there are the most favorable thermo-kitchen machines as an alternative to the thermomix.

Electric toothbrushes in the test - which brushes best?

Electric toothbrushes in the test - which brushes best?

Fun does not brush teeth actually. But if you have a root treatment behind you, the procedure is quite pleasant. If then still comfortable technology assists - the better! Electric toothbrushes are now found in many German bathrooms . But which models clean thoroughly and gently? Does it have to be a toothbrush or a rotary brush? The answer is the test, for which six electric toothbrushes were compared in the laboratory and the hard plaster insert.

Huge price differences
Precisely because inadequate or bad dental care can have so painful and extremely expensive consequences, many customers pay for expensive models with many extras up to 200 euros - is still cheaper than a new bridge. But does a 10 Euro brush from the discounter really bad? Especially since it is not done with the purchase of the electric toothbrush: Who has worn the supplied brush heads after a few months, has to buy new - and they are partially expensive. In addition, electric toothbrushes do not have a very long life, because although technically quite possible, their batteries can not be changed. After a few years, the electricity store is over, and a new brush has to come. Sometimes water gets in the way of time and the electronics lame. After the warranty expires. Especially with more expensive brushes beyond 100 euros annoying.

Brushing teeth with medical assistance
In order to test the equipment, the cleaning effect, the technique and the handling of the toothbrushes, the company was cooperated with the renowned Stuttgart institute IPI. Part of the elaborate test course was a test with 20 subjects and medical support. For an additional, independent assessment of the results, expert advice was obtained from Dr. Katy Düsterhöft. The doctor works at the MVZ Dentologicum in Hamburg, the largest dental care center for oral-maxillofacial surgery in northern Germany.

Rotation or sound?
Electric toothbrushes are available in two versions:
  • Rotary brush: It is also known as an electric round head toothbrush and pivots its round brushhead back and forth about 4400 times per minute. On some models, the brush head also pulsates backwards and forwards, in the test, the two Braun Oral-B models.
  • Sonic toothbrush: This variant is even more rapid, because it works with 15,000 to 40,000 vibrations per minute. The term "sonic toothbrush" is, however, misleading, since, of course, not the sound cleans, but the associated vibration of the oval brushhead.

Danger to the gums
Does one of these variants better brush the teeth? No! As the results of the test show, Braun's rotation test winner follows a Philips toothbrush with virtually identical cleaning effects. However, some people are better off with a rotary brush. In addition, the individual cleaning behavior plays a role: With a round head brush you have to clean each tooth individually. Toothbrushes clean their heads with a larger surface at a time - this can be useful for people who are devoted to a little less dedication to tooth hygiene.

Electric toothbrushes in the test - which brushes best?

Bristly?
The quality of the bristles is more important than the drive technology of the device. And here, the institute IPI found clear differences: Only well-rounded bristles as in the test winner clean the teeth thoroughly and gently - but sharp-edged or broken tips can injure the gums.

The toothbrush as a gadget
The differences in equipment are less significant in words. All test candidates have a timer which reports the end of the two-minute cleaning work. A pressure sensor can also be helpful; In the test field, however, only the two devices from Braun warn if the brush head presses too hard and so stresses the gum. If you do not have to look at the money, you can expand your collection of smart gadgets with an electric toothbrush, which sparks data to the smartphone.

Expensive after the purchase
But do not be impressed by a brush trio or quartet that comes with the toothbrush. Please pay attention to the price of the replacement brush heads instead, because there are clear differences: the standard brush heads for Braun and Panasonic devices cost 5 euros each, Philips even requires 7.50 euros - who changes the attachment every two months In 45 euros for new brushes! The devices of the big drugstore markets show that it is more favorable. At Müller, a brush costs 2 euros, while Rossmann even costs only 1.60 euros.

Power consumption and battery life
The electricity consumption of electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, The recharge times of the test candidates fluctuate extremely but in practice it does not matter whether the device with a load now 50 minutes or nearly 4 hours of cleaning - after 2 minutes is eh end. What about charging time? The testers have tested whether 5 minutes of charging time for a cleaning process - but only the Philips and Panasonic models.

Tip: Because the battery does not change, you should take care of it, ie: Leave the newly purchased brush in the charger until the battery is fully charged. After that, the toothbrush should be returned to the charger only when the battery is almost empty. Repeat this procedure approximately once a month, otherwise you can put the toothbrush on the charger after each cleaning.

Break for the electric brush
Do not clean your teeth completely. "I recommend that you always brush your hands with your hand, so you do not forget it," advises dentist Dr. Katy Düsterhöft. "This way you do not forget your motor skills and you can just put the normal toothbrush back on your holiday, for example.

Conclusion: Electric toothbrushes in the test
None of the tested electric toothbrushes is a fault. After choosing a functional principle - rotation or sound brush - one finds among the models in the places 1 to 4 only devices with good or even very good cleaning effect. The test winner Oral-B Genius 9000 from Braun is however with an MSRP of 299.99 euros extremely expensive. At the other end of the spectrum is around € 25 the winner of Müller's prize, but its cleaning effect is only "satisfactory". Between these two price extremes you will find three good models between 40 and 100 euros. Annoying: The battery can not be exchanged with any of the toothbrushes tested. In the event of a defect after expiry of the warranty, only the dustbin remains. Here the industry should improve!

Is there an EU sales stop for smartphones, tablets and navi?

Is there an EU sales stop for smartphones, tablets and navi?

Es sounds like a bad joke, but from summer onwards, all wireless devices must disappear from the sales shelves - and all over Europe! Debt is an expiring EU directive on technical standards - the EU Commission has simply forgotten the elaboration of new standards. Affected by the ban on sales are smartphones, tablets, navigation devices, smartwatches and WLAN routers.

Blue letter to the European Commission
To prevent this, the Federal Government urges the rapid resolution of the problem in an internal letter to the responsible industrial commissioner, Elzbieta Bienkowski. The letter to the world states: "After the end of the transitional period, countless new, innovative products will not be launched on the market since June 2017 due to the lack of approval standards. Old products from thousands of European manufacturers can no longer be sold and must be taken from the market, "the world quoted.

Economic chaos
If no transitional periods are granted in the short term, the sales permit for countless electrical appliances will be extinguished. This chaos would have far-reaching consequences - not only for consumers, warns Brigitte Zypries, Federal Minister of Economics: "Without a new standard," not only economic damage in all member states and numerous companies but also dangers for jobs in the electrical and electronics industry as well as in trade ".

Is there an EU sales stop for smartphones, tablets and navi?

EU Directive without new standards
The new directive is already valid from summer 2016 onwards, but the standardization organization ETSI , which is responsible for the timely implementation, has "penned", according to the Federal Government, and has not yet completed and published all the new standards. Setting up a transition period has obviously been lost sight of. Now lacks the time to remedy the maladministration in time. Specifically, it is here to control for the 5-GHz WLAN standard .

Longer transition period
In order to put an end to the whole haunts, the easiest solution is to extend the transition period. This is the only way to close the regulatory gap in the short term and avoid chaos. So it remains exciting in the next few weeks which short-term solution the EU Commission proposes. COMPUTER BILD keeps you up to date.

AVM FritzBox 7590: Price, Specs, News - with Super DSL solution!

AVM FritzBox 7590: Price, Specs, News - with Super DSL solution!

In Highlight for consumers at CeBIT 2017 comes from AVM: The FritzBox 7590 is the new top model of the Berlin WLAN specialist. There have been some changes to previous models, though not everything has changed. COMPUTER BILD informed.

FritzBox 7590: Differences to the 7580
It was for a long time unclear why AVM publicly emphasized that the FritzBox 7580 launched in the trade at the end of 2016 was neither the successor of the legendary FritzBox 7490 nor the new top model. Finally, the 7580 offered on the one hand all the functions, which one knew already from the 7490 - on the other hand, however, also modern WLAN technology as well as a fundamentally fresh design. The secret came when AVM announced the FritzBox 7580 at last year's CeBIT: Until the targeted market launch, the new chips with the long-awaited WLAN standard " ac Wave 2 " and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) But still no modem chips for the upcoming DSL technology "Supervectoring". Therefore, The new WLAN technology with the 7580 to market - and the fresh DSL technology with the real flagship to follow. In the 80s and 90s series, AVM basically pursues different objectives. For example, the case of the 7580 is significantly larger than the 7590. The advantage: chips with the latest technology (in this case WLAN ac Wave 2) can be easily integrated in addition to the main board; Accordingly the WLAN chips with the Fritz box 7580 are not integrated into the main board, but applied later. With the 7590, on the other hand, WLAN technology is integrated directly on the main board. As a result, innovative technologies will in future also be seen first in the 80s series, since AVM does not need to wait until the presence of highly integrated main boards. Fit for the DSL of the future: keyword Supervectoring
The FritzBox 7590, which presented AVM now at the CeBIT is thus the true successor of the legendary Fritz box 7490. In the trade come the model already two months later - clearly faster and cheaper than usual. The 7590 brings two major innovations. On the one hand the design: AVM returns to the horizontal housing, which however in white and with curved lines much more skilfully than at the 7490. On the other hand - more importantly - the technology: The FritzBox 7590 is the first router for private users ("Consumer Router ") In Germany, which is already prepared for the upcoming Super-DSL. Thanks to the "Supervectoring 35b" technology, you will be able to reach speeds almost at the level of the cable and fiber competition, even with conventional telephone sockets via the copper cable in the street, Ideally up to 300 megabits per second (MBit / s)! The catch: The tempo is linked to conditions. Firstly, the DSL providers have to bring the technology in the gray boxes along the street (DSLAM and / or in German: DSL access multiplexer) to Vordermann and ensure that these are well-connected by glass fiber. Secondly, the high pace can only be reached by a few hundred meters - after which it drops rapidly. Exact timetables for the Supervectoring has not yet betrayed any of the major German DSL providers. The Telekom will probably offer it only at the end of 2017 or even 2018 in a larger style. Nevertheless, the new technology for DSL vendors was probably reason enough to delay the switch to the next FritzBox generation about the FritzBox 7580 by half a year.

WLAN steam with eight antennas
With the core function of each Fritz box, thus the WLAN connection, sets the 7590 on the same technology, which already convinced in the test of the 7580: Eight antennas - four each for 2.4 and 5 GHz (GHz) - are due to the "4x4 MIMO "Technology can reach high speeds, even if the FritzBox for the corner or by stairs houses funkt. AVM speaks of speeds of up to 1,733 MBit / s on the 5 GHz frequency band (via WLAN ac) and 800 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band (WLAN n). However, even in the ideal case, data rates of a few hundred MBit / s are expected in practice. Also integrated is the MU-MIMO technology, as in the case of the 7580. This allows newer devices - such as the Galaxy-S- or A-Class - with simultaneous use better to supply, since each Fritz box antenna the data targeted at the Respective terminal. Good thing: Thanks to the "Band Steering" procedure, the FritzBox takes care of assigning the currently best frequency to each device. This makes it no longer necessary to manually switch from 2.4 to 5 GHz WLAN, for example, if interference from neighboring WLANs occurs. Band Steering can also be retrofitted with the Fritz box 7490, over the operating system FritzOS 6.80.

Old Virtues: ISDN, DECT & Co.
The view on the connections shows that one has developed the box in and for Germany. The freshly baked Fritz box generation also works on the (though gradually dying) analog and ISDN connections. And thanks to the "S0 socket", which has always been installed in the top models, one also uses its old ISDN devices at new IP connections. In addition DECT is integrated, whereby one DECT cordless telephones without base itself directly at the Fritz box announces. (Comfortably goes with AVM FritzFon models or better Gigaset handset.) There are also two analogue connections, for example for the external fax machine.

USB should speed up
As with its predecessors, four Gigabit LAN ports are built-in for network cables, and a socket for external modems such as the cable or fiber-optic port (WAN). The two USB 3.0 ports are supposed to offer two to four times faster data throughput than the previous model - plus allow the connection of LTE sticks or USB printers. The brightness of the LEDs in the housing can also be automatically dimmed for the first time, depending on the ambient light; But it does not work. The power requirement should remain at the usual level. Nice detail: The Wandhalterung has the same dimensions as with the Fritz box 7490.

Rating: FritzBox 7590
If you now buy a DSL router, the 7590 should consider. Hardly any other router is so future-proof, especially for DSL. If you own the predecessor 7490, but waits: The new VDSL supervisionctoring connections are not yet, only the WLAN is compared to the 7490 better. Owners of the 7580 feel no difference until the introduction of the VDSL Supervectoring at their own house connection, as long as the technology is not yet available. And this may take until 2018 - depending on the location and connection even longer.
